On this day in 1949, President Truman announced that the United States detected evidence of an atomic explosion in the Soviet Union. Many of his advisers believed that the Russians couldnt have an atomic bomb already, and that a reactor blew up. In a recently opened oral history, Atomic Energy Commission member Lewis Strauss feels differently. On pages 34 and 35, he states that he not only believed the Soviet Union already had an atomic weapon, but they had several - this is just the first one that the United States caught.
