On this day in 1956, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (then known as the Georgia Prep Sports Hall of Fame) inducted its inaugural class at a banquet held at the Atlanta Biltmore Hotel. Members of that first class included Lanier High School (Macon) football coach Selby Buck, Georgia Tech halfback Clint Castleberry, Vienna High School basketball coach Joe Jenkins, University of Georgia end Vernon "Catfish" Smith, Tech High School (Atlanta) football coach Claude "Gabe" Tolbert, and Savannah High School basketball coach John Varnedoe.
