On this day in 1957, the legendary Sam Cooke was to debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. Cooke was introduced as part of a lineup that included a very young Paul Anka, country singer Jimmie Rodgers, impressionist Sue Carson, and the singing sister act of Anna Maria and Carlia Alberghetti accompanied by their mother Vittoria on piano. Cooke was scheduled as the very last act, following the Dancers of Bali. After a preview of the next weeks program and introducing actor Rod Steiger, Ed tossed it off to Sam Cooke. Cooke barely got past Darling you-ou-ou, send me... before being cut off by the CBS logo. The live show ran long and TV audiences did not get to see Cooke finish his number that night. However, he would get a second chance when Ed invited him back a month later so that he could sing You Send Me in its entirety. youtu.be/REjmIdpAHsw
