On this day in 1987, seven top New York Mob bosses and associates were each sentenced to 100 years in prison. The Mafia Commission Trial took place in Manhattan Federal District Court and the prosecution was led by then-U.S. Attorney General, Rudy Giuliani. Giuliani proclaimed that “Our approach is to wipe out the five families,” and in a way, he was successful. The heads of the five families were among those prosecuted during that trial. However, Paul Castellano was murdered before the trial concluded, leaving the Gambino family unrepresented in the trial
