On this day in 2010, a young Tunisian unemployed graduate set - TopicsExpress

On this day in 2010, a young Tunisian unemployed graduate set himself ablaze in Tunis due to unemployment, corruption, and other vices in his country. This action led to outrage and turmoil, not only in Tunisia but the whole of the Arab world resulting into what became known as the Arab Spring. To date, most of those Arab states are still struggling to recover from that pogrom. In our country Nigeria, those same vices persist, and in a more daring dimension and yet the victims and many others who are so piqued have not seen reason to resort to a more dramatic action to register the outpouring of their feelings. Recently Gen Yakubu Gowon celebrated his 80th birthday and called on Nigerians who are so intolerant of the happenings to either leave this country or stop complaining. I follow in the advice of the octagenerian that since prayers, insults, name-calling, etc have not brought back the Chibok girls, neither has corruption, kidnapping, arson, pipeline vandalisation, non-payment of salaries, nepotism, and other fraudulent acts have been abated. It will be more reasonable for someone that is so pained to bell the cat for others to follow. As for me, God in Heaven has been providing my daily needs and I thank Him for that. I donot wish to be like others. I have a strong feeling of satisfaction for what I have. Anybody that feels otherwise should do something dramatic and spectacular so that he/she shall live in our minds forever, thus justifying the saying that to live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die.
