On this day in History in 97 Emperor Nerva was forced by the Praetorian Guard to adopt general Marcus Ulpius Trajanus as his heir and successor. In 312 Constantine I defeated Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, becoming the sole Roman emperor. In 1864 the Battle of Fair Oaks & Darbytown Road (also known as the Second Battle of Fair Oaks) ended. Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant withdrew from Fair Oaks, Virginia, after failing to breach the Confederate defenses around Richmond, Virginia. In 1922 Italian fascists led by Benito Mussolini marched on Rome and took over the Italian government. In 1942 the Alaska Highway (Alcan Highway) was completed through Canada to Fairbanks, Alaska. In 1962 end of Cuban missile crisis, Nikita Khrushchev ordered the removal of Soviet missiles from Cuba.
