On this day in music history: November 21, 1983 - Seven And The Ragged Tiger, the third album by Duran Duran is released. Produced by Alex Sadkin, Ian Little, and Duran Duran, it is recorded at AIR Studios in Montserrat, W.I., and EMI 301 Studios in Sydney, Australia from May - October 1983. Issued in the wake of their breakthrough success on a worldwide basis with Rio, the band will spend most of the year away from the UK as tax exiles, writing new material in the South Of France. Though they will come up with material that ends up on the finished album, writing will be a struggle, with most of the songs being completed as the sessions progress. Initial recording will take place on the island of Montserrat and is completed in Sydney, Australia. The latter portion of the sessions will be tense, largely because of the long period of time that producer Sadkin takes in mixing the album. Mixing will take so long in fact that the band will not deliver the master tapes for the first single to EMI Records (Union Of The Snake (#3 Pop) and its non-LP B-side Secret Oktober) until twenty four hours before they are scheduled to be manufactured. The title will refer metaphorically to the seven as being the five members of the band and their two managers Michael and Paul Berrow, and the ragged tiger being the pursuit of success. It will spin off three singles including New Moon On Monday (#10 Pop) and The Reflex (#1 Pop). The album will also be the last full length studio release featuring the original five members of Duran Duran before 2004s Astronaut. In 2010, Tiger is remastered and reissued as a three disc set (two CDs and one DVD). The first disc features the original album, with disc two containing the single Is There Something I Should Know (#1 UK, #4 US Pop), along with 12 dance remixes and live versions, and non-LP B-sides. The DVD includes the live concert As The Lights Go Down filmed in Oakland, CA in April of 1984 (without the theatrical footage added to the Arena (A Strange Notion) home video release from 1985. It also contains all of the original music videos from the album, plus two television appearances on Top Of The Pops. Seven And The Ragged Tiger will hit number one on the UK album chart, peaking at number eight on the Billboard Top 200, and is certified 2x Platinum in the US by the RIAA.
