On this day in musical history , 4th December 1971: The Montreux Casino in Switzerland burnt to the ground during a Frank Zappa gig. The incident is immortalized by Deep Purples 1973 hit, Smoke On The Water - some stupid with a flare gun, burned the place to the ground... A recording of the outbreak and fire announcement can be found on a Frank Zappa Bootleg album titled Swiss Cheese / Fire. Smoke on the Water soon became a staple riff used in guitar shops for testing out new axes by beginners . It is always met by derision by any workers in the shop. If you really want to upset a shop assisant in a music shop, it always pays to play the bass line from the Pink Floyd song Money.
