On this day, thanks to RAAF Air Power Development Centre: 25th May 2006 Troops delivered to Timor On this day, RAAF C-130 and B-707 transports delivered troops and vehicles of the 3rd Battalion Group from Townsville to Dili, in Timor Leste (East Timor), to deal with a renewed political and civil crisis engulfing the fledgling nation. Australia led a coalition of forces from New Zealand and Malaysia to help restore stability in a situation that was out of control. In addition to the 1300 ground ADF troops taken in for what was known as Operation Astute, the RAAF also deployed airfield defence guards, an Air Force evacuation handling centre, aeromedical evacuation teams, command and control, and air load personnel. On return flights, the transports brought out Australian and foreign nationals fleeing the violence in Dili. The RAAF also had AP-3C Orions involved in supporting the operation with intelligence from surveillance.
