#OnThisDay in National Historic Landmark history, Oct. 29, 1929: Black Tuesday!!! Stock prices plunged on the NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE as panicked investors traded roughly 16,000,000 shares in a single day. Thousands lost everything. For the next three years security values disappeared, and the country slid into the greatest depression in its history. Deserving or not, the New York Stock Exchange will always be a symbol of this traumatic chapter in our history. The New York Stock Exchange, virtually synonymous with Wall Street, is the headquarters of the nations largest securities market. It began in 1792 under a buttonwood tree, and, after a number of temporary locations, moved into the first section of its present building early in the 20th century. Designed by architect George Post, the Exchange is fronted by an imposing Corinthian portico on a high podium, a fitting architectural symbol for a Temple of Finance. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on June 2, 1978.
