One of my contributions in 2014 was to initiate, and do most of the behind-the-scenes work on, an investigation of voting rights violations in South Carolina. Its a systematic pattern: Ex-offenders who have completed criminal sentences are being denied their legal right to vote. I became aware of the situation through my extensive voter registration efforts with the South Carolina Democratic Party. The Party was quite unwilling to address this pervasive problem. But when I alerted them, the SC Progressive Network and our state chapter of the ACLU immediately stepped up to the challenge. I supported their efforts to mount a federal lawsuit -- and to introduce legislation --- by gathering evidence through a telephone survey of election officials.
