Walter Big Gil Stromquist “Big Gil” Stromquist, at six-foot, ten inches tall, was a noted Austin Golden Gloves Champion and then professional boxer, having fought in Madison Square Garden in 1943. Mr. Stromquist entered the nightclub business in 1955 opening Gil’s Club, one of Austins most well known clubs for 27 years. I still remember him from the days at Hills Cafe (sizzlin steaks after the clubs closed) and him driving a Cadillac with the front seat readjusted
