One of my treasured memories as a writer was spending an afternoon - TopicsExpress

One of my treasured memories as a writer was spending an afternoon in the late 1970s talking to Charlie Haden, in San Francisco, for Rolling Stone. We talked about Ornette Coleman, harmolodics, politics, Scott LaFaro, Keith Jarrett, Carla Bley and the wonderful Liberation Music Orchestra album, and about trouble and renewed hope, among other things. (This obviously isnt that article; I wouldnt know how to find it.) He was one of the most gracious people Ive met, though it seemed that his eyes were always scanning some private reflection of pain and loss. Years later, I saw him play with the Minutemen, at McCabes in Santa Monica. It was wonderful. Charie Haden believed in discovery and hope, and he backed all that up with courage and risk-taking.
