One of the loveliest things I learned in Portugal was - you dont have to be in a manege to ride movements. Shoulder-in is very useful on a busy road to avoid traffic; half-pass can make it easier to navigate a steep slope; collected trot is the only way to preserve your horses energy if you are riding out for long - a fast trot can be very tiring; piaffe is a nice way to keep your horse from fidgeting on the spot - and to show off - whilst talking to someone on the ground; and then to leave them with a degree of pride and dignity - there is nothing quite like the passage! In other words, all part of your average hack - wherever you are - in a town or the countryside. Maybe the person who took this lovely photo of me in my younger day on my fabulous Palomo Linares might make herself known!!??
