One off volunteering opportunities at Oxford Island Shake off the Christmas cobwebs at Oxford Island’s Woodland Workout! Wrap up in your winter woollies and work off those excess Christmas pounds at Lough Neagh Discovery Centre’s renowned ‘Woodland Workout’ this New Year. Meeting in the foyer of the centre, local residents can take part in this annual ‘workout’ which involves trimming back the hazel trees and the different varieties of willow found at the Craigavon Borough Council run Oxford Island each Saturday morning (10th, 17th, 24th and 31st) throughout January from 11am to 1pm. This innovative trimming technique is called ‘Coppicing’ and far from harming the tree, is an age old technique which revitalises and improves the health of the tree. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn about the many trees which reside at Oxford Island and interesting folklore about the different species of trees. The old wood coppiced from the trees will not go to waste as it will be stacked and used as ‘habitat piles’ - making a refuge for small wildlife residing on the Island. The ‘good’ hazel and willow will then be stored and participants will be shown some willow planting techniques. As the weather may be wet, appropriate waterproof clothing and footwear are required. As equipment is limited it would be greatly appreciated if the keen gardeners wishing to take part could bring their own ‘snappers’ and/or secateurs.
