One recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours. For every tonne of plastic that is recycled we save the equivalent of 2 peoples energy use for 1 year. In 2008 in Bahrain about 3500 tonnes of waste per day was disposed in the landfill. Bahrain now generates more than 1.6 million tons of solid wastes every year. In 2013 Bahrain generated 4,200 tonnes of municipal waste per DAY, 7 tonnes of medical waste per day, and 380 tonnes of industrial waste per day. Municipal solid waste in Bahrain is characterized by a very high percentage of organic material (around 60 percent) which is mainly composed of food wastes. Food wastes are biodegradable and when composted create dirt (organic material for growing grass, plants, trees, flowers, and food). Removal of this useful material from the garbage would eliminate 2,520 tonnes A DAY currently going to the landfill, and would produce a beneficial substance useful to everyone. Municipal solid waste in Bahrain also has the presence of a high percent of recyclables in the form of paper (13 percent or 546 tonnes a day in 2013), plastics (7 percent or 294 tonnes a day in 2013) and glass (4 percent or 168 tonnes in 2013) making Bahrain’s Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) a good recycling feedstock. The gross urban waste generation quantity from Middle East countries is estimated at more than 150 million tons annually and increasing every year. Municipal solid waste can also be converted into energy by conventional technologies (such as incineration, mass-burn and landfill gas capture) or by modern conversion systems (such as anaerobic digestion, gasification and pyrolysis). Gas produced by the natural decomposition of MSW can be collected from the stored material and scrubbed and cleaned before feeding into internal combustion engines or gas turbines to generate heat and power as I witnessed in multiple municipalities and universities in the U.S. n addition, the organic fraction of MSW can be anaerobically stabilized in a high-rate digester to obtain biogas for electricity or steam generation. Energy recovery from MSW is rapidly gaining worldwide recognition as the 4th R in sustainable waste management system – Reuse, Reduce, Recycle and Recover. Unity, trusteeship and accountability, that is tawhid, khalifah and akhirah, the three central concepts of Islam, are also the pillars of the environmental ethics of Islam. They constitute the basic values taught by the Noble Quran. It is these values which led Prophet Muhammad, (peace be upon him), to say: Whosoever plants a tree and diligently looks after it until it matures and bears fruit is rewarded, and If a Muslim plants a tree or sows a field and men and beats and birds eat from it, all of it is a charity on his part, and again, The world is green and beautiful, and Allah has appointed you as His stewards over it. Environmental consciousness is born when such values are adopted and become an intrinsic part of our mental and physical make-up. MAY THE PEACE, MERCY, AND BLESSINGS OF ALLAH (swt) BLESS ALL WHO HELPED BRING THIS GREEN CONCEPT TO REALITY. TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, FOR OURSELVES AND FOR THE WORLD OUR CHILDREN WILL INHERIT.
