One thing thats always bugged me is how the idea of being on the right is associated with strength and being on the left associated with weakness. Theres also a kind of gender identification. The right is male, the left is female. Strong men get things done. They build subways and slash budgets. Weak people try to take care of others and eat tofu. Im not saying that there arent people who genuinely believe in small government and lower taxes, Im sure there are, but sometimes it looks to me that an association with the right side of things is at least equally about their self-image - either the image they want to identify with or a denial of the image they dont to be associated with. Its the whole Id rather have a beer with George Bush than with Al Gore phenomenon because presumably Al would bore you with his concern for the environment and when youre drinking beer, you want to talk about sports or tits. Which isnt to say that women arent also prone to this preference for the strong over the weak. Sometimes it is just personal preference, for instance think I would have preferred to go for a beer with Rob Ford over Jack Layton. But still, Ive run into a lot of Ford apologists on Facebook here and I cant help thinking that its more about a posture than a true conviction.
