One year ago today I had my chest cut open and four arteries re-routed around my heart due to major blockages. One was 100% blocked, one was 90% blocked and two were 70% blocked. My cardiologist credits cycling with saving my life in two ways: 1. If I had been sedentary, I would likely have had what’s called a widow maker heart attack, but because I was cycling regularly I knew something was wrong. I started feeling the effects early, less energy to ride which soon became increased difficulty at riding. 2. He said the only thing that kept me alive was how strong my heart is…from cycling. People just don’t normally survive a 100% blockage. I also credit cycling with a pretty quick recovery, they normally keep you in the hospital for 5 days after a cardiac bypass, they booted me in 2. I immediately started walking the neighborhood. I was dying to get back on the bike. In the year since, I have bicycled 2,646 miles including the MS150 and my first Century (100 miles in a day). I have jogged/ran 100 miles. We started eating “nutritarian” (nearly, but not “religiously” vegetarian). My blood pressure is perfect for my age. My blood tests all came back with spectacular numbers a week or so ago. I’m almost to the point where my Doc will be taking me off my Cholesterol and BP meds. Three cheers to Cycling. Praised my God for keeping me around a little longer. I love my wife, I love my kids, my family, my friends, my church family, the cycling community! What grace it is that I have more time to enjoy life with these people. And looking forward to meeting my first granddaddy oh so soon.
