One year ago today...... September 7th On Saturday, September 7th, Steph hit the 26 week 0 day mark in her pregnancy. Milestone #1 met. We aren’t out of the clear, but the odds are now even more so in our favor. 3:15 AM my phone rings. I roll over, probably cursed and answered the phone. Steph tells me that she has been having contractions since 1 o’clock. Dazed I said “ok”. She then proceeds to ASK me if I think I should come down to the hospital. (For all the women reading this: When you call your husband at 3:15AM, it’s an emergency. I can also assure you that, much like he cannot make a rational decision, in your opinion, during the day, he definitely cannot think this through when you woke him up out of a deep sleep.) So I say to her “Steph, you have been having contractions for two and a half weeks, just tell me, do you want me to come there?” I packed up Brady and met her parents at the hospital at 3:45AM, dropped off Brady with them and went on inside. The next few hours were a mix of sleeping, then waking up, sleeping and waking. This was on repeat until we were moved back over to the delivery rooms at 7AM. At about 8:30AM, after a long four and a half hours, I pulled a nurse aside and asked her for her thoughts. She said it didn’t look like the baby was coming today (they had been able to stop the contractions before and were hoping to do the same again) but we would know more when we would see the doctor in about an hour. At 8:50AM the doctor checked Steph and saw she was already at 8cm. With the baby only being at the 26 week mark exactly, a normal child birth would be too traumatic. They tossed me scrubs and the ensuing 40 minutes can only be best related to the commotion that occurs when an ant hill is disturbed. It was an all hands on deck scenario with no time to think and a lot of orders being stated. They rushed Steph to the OR and at 9:31AM, Colton George Rendine was born weighing in at 1lb 14.6oz and 13 inches long. He was able to breathe on his own but was put on a respirator to aide his breathing so he doesn’t tire out. They said he is feisty, which I think started when he kicked out his foot when the doctor first made the C-section incision, making a feet first appearance. (He was not going to wait one more minute in there, he wanted out!) The early prognosis was good, as our pediatrician told us the way the neonatologist spoke of Colton was one of the most enthusiastic that she has spoken of a 26 weeker. Colton was still in the honeymoon phase, which can last from 2 days to 2 weeks after birth from what I gather. We have been told that the roller coaster ride will start up again and we will have good days with some bad days as he continues to grow and mature. He will be in the NICU for a while, “anything before 40 weeks is gravy” as I was told, which will be December 14. We spend a lot of time peering into his incubator but I haven’t touched him yet. There are two other babies in the NICU that were born around the same time as Colton and weigh about the same, so they are calling the three of them “triplets”.
