Onion Fields This series is meant to be a conversation. If there are questions or “ya buts” (yes, that may be so but…), or something needs to be clarified please speak up! ANGER: Is this a good or a bad emotion? How do you experience anger, is it used against you? How do you use anger? As a child I would crumble around anger. It did not need to be directed at me and still I would freeze or hide. Growing up I came to view anger as destructive and terrifying. It was an indulgence I would not make. I would not get angry. I would not yell at anyone. I bottled it up. Eventually I found out that anger cannot be bottled up; I discovered the truth that anger cannot be the unfelt emotion; it is there, it is in play, it has its effect whether we like it or not. The truth is that anger is not good or bad? It is an extreme emotion that is meant to get your ATTENTION. This is the emotion that says “Hey! Pay Attention!! Something needs to be done here.” We get ourselves into trouble when we stuff it down, or when we overreact. Clearly to roast this onion one must pay it attention. Give it its due. It is only poisonous when it is denied. Denial gives it opportunity to fester; to become more that it is, more than it needs to be. The trick here is to recognize it and express it. Speak up! Allow your voice to say what you need. This can be done without aggression and hate. If you are so angry you feel you will act inappropriately, make sure you hit some pillows, take a walk, or scream alone in your room until you can express your needs clearly and calmly to the person or situation that has caused the anger. Anger is an incoherent emotion with a vital lesson to teach us. Once mastered anger evolves into Compassion, the first of Inner Heart’s Five words.
