Opinion: Stimpson is right on cutting Mobile city employee benefits. One city employee complained: “We’ve known the mayors in this city since 1985 and none of them made a proposal to cut insurance for retirees. It’s just mind boggling to me.” That is the problem. Prior mayors have put Mobile in its current financial position not only through the String of Pearls but also through their reluctance to address those benefits. City employees and retirees need to face the reality that municipalities can no longer afford extravagant benefits and retirement packages.
