Orca whales have been putting on quite a show in Puget Sound lately, but this article shows the alarming trend: For our Southern Resident Killer Whales, it comes down to to few salmon and too much pollution. Are we willing to do what is needed to bring them back? Martha Kongsgaard, who leads the Puget Sound Partnership, a government agency charged with cleaning up the Sound, agreed J32’s death puts into relief just how much is at stake if the region doesn’t pick up the pace in tackling these problems. “You don’t want to raise the alarm every time a whale dies, but I think we are really on the brink of possibly losing them,” she said. “And we ignore the orcas’ incredible totemic and symbolic power at our peril. They’re telling us it’s an emergency right now.”
