~ Our Southern Heritage ~ One thing is for certain. Were all claiming our southern heritage, and we wont be talked out of it very easily. Its a glorious heritage, and its only natural that we tenaciously cling to it. Call it provincial. Call it sentimental. But, its the way we are, and Im glad. A song I heard not long ago in Country music said it well. You aint just whistlin Dixie -- You aint just slappin your knee. Im a grandson of the Southland, Boys-- An heir to the Confederacy. You aint just whistlin Dixie, Cause the cattle-calls callin me home. So put me down there where I wanna be; Plant my feet with Robert E. Lee; Bury my bones under a cypress tree; And , never let me roam. Chivalry drew its last breath in the Old South. Descendants of gallant knights and ladies fair, southerners became the last society to embrace the remnants of the old European traditions of the Middle Ages, when mans word was his sacred pledge, and the sanctity of womanhood was defended with near religious fervor. Its fate was sealed by the conquest of troglodyte invaders who instituted a new order, and the days of fair damsels and knights in shining armor were consigned to the pages of our memory Excerpts taken from: Southern By The Grace Of God ~ Michael Griss ~Eileen~
