Our Sunday School class ICE CREAM SOCIAL will be Friday 9/12/2014 at Betty & Gene Moores house: 120 Windmere, Lumberton, TX 77657 be there at 6:00 pm September 14, 2014 - Explore the Bible Session 2 Pay Attention Hebrews 2:1-4 Main Idea: Believers must guard against drifting away from their confession of Jesus. Have you ever ignored a warning? What happened when you did? Do you typically think first of warnings as good, bad, or something in between? Why? What situations potentially cause a person to drift when it comes to obeying Christ and holding to the gospel truth? Hebrews 2:1-4 is often described as the first of five “exhortation” or “warning” passages placed strategically in the epistle. These passages remind us that theology is not just a mental exercise. LISTEN! (HEB. 2:1) 1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. How is a divine warning an act of grace? When has a warning in Scripture helped you resist the pull of doubt and unbelief? Which of these might be warning signs that a follower of Christ is drifting from the gospel: (a) decrease in church attendance; (b) an interest in a cult or non-Christian religion; (c) pattern of worldly behavior; (d) all of these? What other possible warning signs can you identify? THE PERIL OF NEGLECT (HEB. 2:2-3a) 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; 3a How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; How does God hold His people accountable today? How does this compare to the accountability faced by the Old Testament hearers? TRUTH VERIFIED (HEB. 2:3b-4) 3b which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; 4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will? How does God confirm His message today? How does the validation of the message impact a believer’s responsibility to share the gospel? On what grounds do you base your belief in the gospel message as true and binding? How does your confidence in the gospel help you tell others about salvation in Jesus? KEY DOCTRINE It is the duty of every child of God to seek constantly to win the lost to Christ by verbal witness undergirded by a Christian lifestyle. See Matthew 5:14-16; 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; 1 Peter 2:12. (see PSG, p. 28) BIBLE SKILL Read, reflect, and respond emotionally to a Bible verse. Focus on Hebrews 2:1 - Read the verse aloud several times. Each time, emphasize different words or phrases as you read. For example, in one reading emphasize the word “we” each time it appears. Then read the verse again, emphasizing all the action words. Emphasize still other words in a third reading. Jot down your thoughts. How does the verse move you emotionally? What feelings were evoked by the different words and phrases as you emphasized them? Review the words to “Love Lifted Me” (Hymn 546, The Worship Hymnal, 1991), be ready to SING with me. Most of the questions and comments are in the book – but lets be ready to really discuss the points and questions on this outline. Stay Strong In The Lord – Love ya – Butch & Sondra
