Our charity project, MILSAA, is so excited to become an official Community Partner of the 2013 Bromo Marathon! Read on to learn more about their new friendship... RACING FOR EDUCATION Two charities have joined forces and will be running their hearts out on top of an active mountain in one of Indonesia’s most remote areas. Why… are they running from something? Most definitely not! In fact, they’re facing a challenge square in the face. So, what’s the challenge? Improving children’s literacy in East Java. The event is the very first Mount Bromo Marathon – a grueling half-road, half-dirt course that will have participants running 42km up a 820,000 year old volcanic crater. (But of course, there are half marathon and 10km options too!) MILSAA (the Melbourne Institute of Language Studies Aid Abroad program) is partnering with the organisers of Bromo Marathon to bring more learning resources to the Bromo Library. The event is being held in the mountain villages of East Java, surrounding Bromo Tengger-Semeru National Park on September 1, 2013. Event co-founder Shane Butler, an American based in Tosari, East Java, Indonesia with the US Peace Corps, conceived of the event after seeing the learning needs of local children and teens. “The students in the surrounding communities here exercise an exceptional amount of self-motivation and eagerness to learn. However, the region lacks the infrastructure and common resources necessary to provide an inviting educational environment, creating an unappealing atmosphere for students. The Bromo Marathon hopes not only to shed light on the issue, but to raise funds to attend to the deficiencies with 100% of the event’s proceeds going to the development and advancement of school library facilities in the area,” Shane said. Jayde Lovell, co-founder of MILSAA, said the team was thrilled to be working with a like-minded organisation advancing education in rural Indonesia. “We both strive towards a common goal of improving life outcomes through learning and opportunity for young Indonesians, so this partnership is really exciting for us. “At MILSAA, we love raising awareness through fun activities, so this project immediately struck a chord with us. Another reason it’s such a great initiative is that it’s promoting physical fitness and good health. Full credit goes to Shane and his colleagues, who are working so hard to make this happen, it’s a huge undertaking. “Our role is really just to show our support and spread the word. We also have a MILSAA team slogging it out on the half marathon – we’re very excited, and just a little bit scared!” MILSAA will be delivering learning resources to the Bromo Library from Jakarta, generously donated by Mentari Books. The inaugural Bromo Marathon has been named one of Asia’s top destination races by CNN Travel, and already has a strong contingent of runners flying in from across the globe.
