Our statement from CEO Stosh Cotler in response to the tragic deaths of New York City Police officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu: All of us at Bend the Arc are heartbroken for the families of Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, two brave officers who stood up to protect their community, and whose lives were ended by an incomprehensible act of violence. These men, their families, and the NYPD are in our prayers. Ours is a movement that believes deeply in the dignity and value of every human life. An act like this is abhorrent to us. It is a violation of everything we stand for, everything we work for. We join with those who have condemned these murders as unconscionable and unjust. In the aftermath of this tragedy, it has been disappointing and frightening to see some leaders exploit this terrible moment to denigrate the passionately peaceful protests calling for reforms in our justice system. It is inaccurate, unfair and unhelpful to blame the thousands of Americans standing up for common sense reforms for the actions of one emotionally unstable man. We call on all New Yorkers and all Americans to see this as a moment of shared humanity, and to work together to build a society that values the lives and human dignity of all people.
