Our weaving aunty mama who will be facilitating our Mother of Pearl weaving and costume making workshops... Kui Taukilo was born in Hakupu, Niue where she was taught to weave by her mother and her multitude of aunties. For 10 years Kui worked with the Brown Roots Pacific Arts Collective facilitating weaving workshops in schools, festivals and community events. She worked as a key artist on the ‘Lalaga – Weave’ project, a 2 year weaving and photography project working with young people from South Sea Islander and Pacific communities in Melbourne, Tasmania and Mackay. The project culminated in 3 exhibitions including the Pacific Edge Conference 2006 Mackay, Parkville Juvenile Justice Centre, Melbourne 2007 and St Helens Café 2007 Tasmania. As part of the Pacific Women’s Weaving Circle (PWWC), Kui facilitated numerous workshops and was a key artist in 4 PWWC exhibitions including Miss-Design, Ian Potter Museum of Art 2011, FA – Pandanus exhibition at the Newport Substation 2012, Multicultural and Refugee Exhibition @ Laverton Arts Space and ‘Solstice’ event @ Melbourne Arts House 2012. Other key exhibitions include; • New Way – Te Ao Hurihuri, Contemporary Pacific Arts Festival 2013 • Sustain Exhibition, Wyndham Art Gallery Kui is also a key artist as part of ‘A Circle to Weave In’ exhibition, which will be presented at the BlakDot Gallery as part of the Contemporary Pacific Arts Festival Satellite program 2014 on the 27th March. Director of K.I.N Designs, her vision is to continue to maintain and transfer traditional weaving knowledges to support Pacific youth and communities through this age old medium.
