Outreach Notice Forestry Technician (Research) GS-0462-4 INTRODUCTION: The Southern Research Station will soon advertise 2 GS-0462-4 Forestry Technician (Research) positions. MAJOR DUTIES: This position is located at the Bent Creek Experimental Forest/Southern Research Station Asheville, NC. The incumbent independently performs technical duties in support of professional scientists conducting multiple research projects related to upland hardwood forest management and restoration. Data collection duties include study plot installation, tree species identification (including seedlings), use of forestry-related equipment (topo maps, diameter tapes, GPS, distance measuring devices, clinometer, densiometer), and data recording. Must have a valid driver’s license. QUALIFICATIONS: GS-0462-4 TOUR OF DUTY: Temporary-NTE 6 Months Qualifying experience for the GS-4 level includes six months general experience that demonstrates the applicants ability to perform the work of the position or that provided familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the occupation AND six months specialized experience at the GS-3 level that is directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Experience requirements may be met by successful completion of two (2) academic years of post high school education which included at least 12 semester/18 quarter hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester/4 quarter hours in mathematics is creditable. COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements. LOCATION: This position will be located at the Bent Creek Experimental Forest in Asheville. Asheville is the largest city in Western North Carolina with a population of over 70,000. It is the core of a three-county metropolitan area of 229,950. In the last 20 years, Asheville has emerged as one of the eastern United States’ regional centers for cultural amenities. Housing in Asheville is readily available and comes in a variety of price ranges and styles. Median house prices are $250,000 to $300,000. Condos and apartments are also available. The city boasts a symphony, lyric opera, and a ballet. It is well recognized for its thriving drama, music, and arts communities. Asheville is also a regional center for health care, banking, professional services, manufacturing, and transportation. Located at an elevation of 2,200 feet in the heart of the Southern Appalachians, the city has average summer highs of 82 dropping to winter lows of 32, and rainfall from 55 to 60 inches with some areas over 80 inches. Surrounded by national forests and 50 miles from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Asheville is the gateway for numerous rivers and trails and spectacular drives on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
