Just received an invitation from UNHCR to attend forum in DC about statelessness. One of the presenter is Angelina Jolie as special envoy for refugees under UN but unfortunately I wont be able to attend. Dear Mikhail - Greetings from UNHCR! Its been quite some time since we last spoke. I hope this finds you well and warm... As you are likely aware, UNHCR just launched a Global Campaign to Eradicate Statelessness by 2024. Its an ambitious but attainable goal, one that requires strong coordinated actions among governments, civil society, stateless people and UNHCR. Many celebrities and political leaders have publicly joined our High Commissioner in support of the campaign, including Archbishop Desmund Tutu, the Hon. Madeline Albright, Angelina Jolie and others. The Americas region is well-positioned to be the first region in the world to end statelessness. To kick that off, we are holding an event next week in Washington at the Newseum. Details are below. We just found out that we have a small budget to bring a select number of stateless people to attend the event. Given your role in raising awareness about the situation of stateless people in the U.S., we wanted to extend a personal invitation to attend the event and to offer to pay for travel and one nights accommodation. We understand that given the fact that this is so close tot he date, that this might be difficult for you to make the journey here. But we wanted to offer, in case you are able. Please let us know if you are interested in attending and if have any questions. And if you are not able to attend, then we nonetheless want to reach out in solidarity to say that we look forward to working with you and many others in the years to come to bring an end to statelessness in the U.S. and beyond.
