Over the intercom: “Rampal, I have a fried coming over in a short while, you met him when I moved in, so please just send him up when he comes, no need to call me and check, ok?” Pause. Long, loong pause. I realize what I have done. (To myself)“Aaaah, ok, never mind all that … (To Rampal): I… friend… coming…send… up…ok?” No reply. I can hear breathing. Maybe thinking, too. “Errrm, ok, here we go… dost… mere dost” I say, and that uses up my entire Hindi vocabulary. After another pause, I conclude: “Ok, you know what, Rampal, forget it, I’m sure you and my friend will figure it out when he comes… No worries, thanks so much”. As I prepare to hang up, I hear a faint voice coming out of the phone “Friend?”, the voice says. And then again, “friend”, with a bit more conviction. I jump up and blurt out “YES, that’s right, Rampal, friend, friend”, and I am so excited and happy that I start doubting my mental sanity. You did it, Rampal, you got it… Friend! Friend! Oh, the happiness in the little moments… #whyiloverampal
