Over the last couple of weeks, we have seen many reports in the media accusing New Zealanders in Australia of whining. All of these reports base this claim on the findings of a Monash University report. However, as is so typical in the media, this has been a case of sloppy reporting. The actual report found that Kiwis were happy with many aspects of life in Australia. However, it also showed worrying signs of growing dissatisfaction about financial security and social exclusion. In the attached interview, Professor Andrew Markus, who oversaw this research, explains that these results are not a case of whining and can in large part be directly linked to policy changes enacted since 2001 that have stripped Kiwis in Australia of basic rights. - Tim
