Over the past couple weeks, many of you have expressed your concerns on my Facebook wall or contacted my office regarding the Syrian conflict, and I thank you for sharing your opinions with me. The chemical attack on innocent civilians is an atrocity that the world had prayed never to see again. In attempting to state a case for an attack on Syria, President Obama and Secretary Kerry have not articulated what the mission of the United States military would be in Syria and what the end goal would be. The President has said it would be to deter and degrade the Syrian government’s capabilities, but at the same time it would not be to remove the head of government or to weaken its position in this war. The President said he would come to Congress for authorization, but now any congressional action is put on hold by his comments to the nation on September 10th. The President is constantly sending mixed messages. Due to those reasons, I cannot support United States military action in Syria at this time. The American people have also spoken out, stating their strong desire not to become involved in Syria. I appreciate you sharing your opinions, thoughts, and concerns regarding our nation’s actions as we move forward on policy decisions that will affect us both domestically and internationally.
