PARENTING ADVICE WANTED I/we are experiencing a challenge with Sula regarding, well, doing anything she doesnt want to do. Sometimes its a bigger issue than other times. Today it was mostly about being in the team picture at soccer. Getting her to run around on the field wasnt too hard, but she didnt really put her heart into it as much as I would have liked. Mostly it was her slumpy posture and unwillingness to smile for the camera or even make general eye contact with the lens that bothered me. The rest of the team was playing along appropriately and she was the only one not participating. It frustrates me to watch her just troll around on the field not really getting involved but I think the thing thats killing me is that she just says, No. to frickin EVERYTHING and Im kind of losing my mind about it a little bit. The other day I told her that the letters no are the first two letters in the word nothing and that if she goes through life saying NO to everything, then NOTHING will ever happen! I explained (rather emphatically) that in order for things to happen, you need to say YES to them. (I was stricken with an urgent desire to bring back WHAM!s SAY YES TO LIFE T-shirts.) I also told her that no one makes movies or writes books about people who say No all the time, unless the story starts right around the time they decide to say Yes instead. Then we started talking about Winnie the Pooh, and how Pooh always says yes and how Piglet always says no and that nothing would ever happen in Piglets life were it not for his friendship with the more adventurous Pooh. I asked her to think about other characters who say Yes to life, and of course her first response was, BARBIE! and her second response was KEN! Oy. Im asking for your help because right now I cant come up with anything more creative than yelling, and shockingly, that doesnt seem to be helping! :-)
