PERSONNEL BOARD HEARS CHARGES AGAINST MOUNT VERNON POLICE OFFICER By ARTHUR L. MACK MOBILE—A Mount Vernon police officer who was the subject of complaints regarding the alleged harassment of African-American citizens had a formal hearing before the Mobile County Personnel Board on Tuesday. Mario Mendiola, a K-9 officer, is alleged to have used abusive language and made unwarranted drug searches of African-American motorists in the town. Tamara Davis, a Mount Vernon resident, spearheaded a petition drive to have Mendiola’s alleged conduct investigated by the Personnel Board. Among the persons who filed sworn affidavits regarding the charges was Nicholas Nettles, who said that he and a friend, Dominic Crear were among those who were subject to harassment by Mendiola. Mendiola steadfastly denied the charges, stating he followed proper procedure and was simply doing his job. The Mobile County Personnel Board has 14 days from today to make a decision to determine if the accusations have merit. Should the board determine that Mendiola acted improperly, punishment could range from reprimand to termination.
