PET NAME IN THE ARMY...........My name is PALLAV SENGUPTA.Its a sweet bengali name.When I joined the unit after my YOs my CO was a thet sardarji a thorough gentleman.Ihad to spent 30 days with Ummedwar cadre being run outside the unit lines.Condition given to me that the day I know all the jawans by their name,district and their trade(Engrs) I will be dined in the Offrs Mess and allowed to wear my one star. After exactly 30 days I was brought with the platoon in front of the COs office at 1300hrs. Co came out his office at 1340 hrs.My Company Commander reported to CO that youngster is ready with the names,district and trades.CO said break them off except the youngster.I was scared thinjing I may be sent with the next Ummedwar cadre starting next day.Then CO asked my name.Like a Gc I said IC...........2/Lt PALLAV SENGUPTA Si.........r.He asked me to repeat my name.I repeated.He prononced my name in punjabi accent which I didnt like it.He understood my displeasure.Then he asked me how do you pronounce your name. I said in typically bengali accent. He said I am from Punjab and cant pronouncejoint bengali words, either you change your name or give you a separate name.He thought for a while and asked all the Coy Cdrs ,everybody kept quiet.He said we will call him POLLY.Since then I was rechritened as Polly and continued to be known as Polly.Even my wife introduce me to her friends as Polly.
