PHILS OBSCURE ARCHIVE (12) - ITS IMMATERIAL -- A GIGANTIC RAFT (IN THE PHILIPPINES). The 80s was, by and large, pretty bleak for many people. The bright spots were often musical, and some of the most inventive sounds came out of Merseyside and Manchester. While Manchester had Factory Records as a flagship for the underground, and a plethora of other widely diverse acts across the region, Merseyside was behaving in similar fashion; it was a precarious existence for many of the souls involved in making music, but most persevered because they gained satisfaction if not wealth, and if you cant have both, then at least satisfaction is an achievement not to be sniffed at. A few excellent Mersey acts, such as Icicle Works, Echo & The Bunnymen, Julian Cope, China Crisis etc. were at the top of the pile, at least in popularity, but there were several others who deserve some attention, not least Its Immaterial. Most will know them because of their hit Driving Away From Home, but there was so much more to them than one song. Their 2 released albums Lifes Hard And Then You Die and Song are still available on cd, and are so diverse and inspired in their content, they should have sold millions. A year before the hit, I recorded an EP (Fish Waltz) with the duo, and rarely for me, I was happy with the finished article. I investigated their earlier output, and grabbed a copy of tonights offering, which is one of my favourite 80s tracks. None of their vinyl releases before Driving Away has made it to cd, as far as I know, which is a great shame. YouTube says its a 12 version but I have it on 7, with that same pic sleeve. Its worth mentioning that they never broke up - check them out. https://youtube/watch?v=jhgIx91-2f4
