PHILS PSYCHEDELIC ARCHIVE (3) As was mentioned yesterday, listening to each others record collections was a social and musically educational occasion, and its largely a scene from yesteryear to see people wandering the streets with albums tucked underneath the arm, on the way to friends houses. It was part of life for a while in the Claughton part of Birkenhead, particularly on Sunday afternoons. Some of the participants such as John Poole, Roy Gregory, Dave Coathup and Ian Runcie post on these pages. John had the best collection as I think he was the only one of us working; it was certainly down to him that I first heard Electric Music For The Mind And Body, Country Joe & The Fishs first album. By this time psychedelia was in full swing, and Id already heard tonights offering on The Perfumed Garden. As usual with me, it was immediately added to my wish list, along with countless others. When I eventually found a good condition second hand copy (and in stereo!), some 18 months later, it was 22nd December, 1968, but it was still a magic moment. I dont know why the date stuck in my mind, but the magic was this - I got the album home through a very dark and snow covered Birkenhead to find there was no one at home, so by the light of a Christmas tree, I lay on my back with my head between the speakers and just drifted away with the emotion of it all, uninterrupted. My guilty secret is that I have to play the full album, whatever my circumstances, every single 22nd December since then. Bit mad that, isnt it? Really far out and solid though. youtube/watch?v=f4WeqP2G6pI
