PLEASE JOIN OUR ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER URSULA MALCHAU IN EXPRESSING YOUR CONCERN ABOUT ALABAMA’S DEATH PENALTY TO AIRBUS, MOBILE! Advisory Board member, Ursula Malchau wrote the following letter to the Mobile management of the AIRBUS aircraft manufacturing company. AIRBUS is based in Blagnac, France but also has manufacturing facilities in Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom, and what is important for us, in MOBILE AL. Email contacts: oliver.haack@airbus Tom.enders@airbus Dear Mr. Haack, “Leading the way on all fronts” – this is the headline quoted from your Airbus website. It continues as follow: “As a responsible corporate citizen and industry leader, Airbus’ day-to-day operations are guided by a strong commitment to the highest ethical standards […] Building on existing Airbus charitable projects, the Foundation emphasizes and focuses its support on three key themes: youth development, humanitarian and community support, and the environment.” Airbus runs a successful and profitable plant in Mobile/Alabama with good prospects of further expansion. Alabama Governor Robert Bentley as well as many other Alabamians is proud and considers himself fortunate having your company here. In his campaign for upcoming gubernatorial elections he boasts of jobs he has created by luring Airbus to Alabama. But he runs yet another campaign issue in cooperation with the General Attorney - who is also up for re-election - which is not that honorable. In remarkable coincidence, all of a sudden they both pushed for nine execution dates, using State sanctioned murder as a campaign tool. This atrocity is beyond words and should be frowned upon, both publicly as well as in back-room meetings. You deal with the political leaders in Alabama, you provide the State with jobs and taxes, and by doing this you have gained significant influence, especially at times of elections. We ask you to please use your board room skills to convince Governor Bentley to speak out for a moratorium on the death penalty in Alabama. It’s the right thing to do, and you won’t be helping to fund a Government which kills its own citizens, allegedly in the name of justice but in fact in the name of pure revenge. Mr. Tom Enders, on another occasion, emphasized Airbus’ “strong European roots”, and this is certainly not just a geographic but a cultural matter as well. The death penalty is incompatible with our European values, and was abolished for good reasons. It is a violation of general human rights, and we as Europeans should stand strongly against this barbaric practice, notwithstanding financial considerations. What is the worth of a human life in tax breaks and perks? Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Ursula Malchau Advisory Board Member of Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty
