POLICY MAKERS TASKED ON PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED PEOPLE Policy makers have been tasked to formulate policies and put in place measures that will make life more meaningful for physically challenged persons, especially because there is just a thin line between ability and disability. Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Youth and Social Development, Dr. Dolapo Badru, gave the charge at the flag-off of the 2014 Disability Expo organized by the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA). Badru stated that the call became imperative because policy makers need to be conscious of the unknown situation which may make able person become disabled, thereby putting them in position that requires measures that they have failed to put in place when they were in position of authority. While commending LASODA Board for their relentless efforts in the fulfillment of the State Government’s inclusive policy, the Special Adviser also tasked other bodies responsible to provide support programmes for disabled persons. Chairman of LASODA, Mrs. Tolu Animashaun, said the Expo was meant to provide opportunity for participants to become better informed of the resources available in the State for disabled people and provide opportunity for the various exhibitors to network with each other and exchange ideas on issues concerning them. The programme, she further said, was meant to create opportunity for physically challenged persons and those engaged in the production of disability guides and appliances to showcase their goods and services. Earlier in his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of Youth and Social Development, Dr. Adesegun Oshiyimika, noted that the State Government is leaving no stone unturned at ensuring qualitative living standard for every resident, their physical condition notwithstanding. He stated that Lagos State appreciates the existence of its citizens and add values to their existence, while also calling on the public to complement government’s efforts in bringing about a desirable society. In his goodwill message, the representative of the Rotary Club District Governor, Rotarian Dele Balogun, lauded the state government’s initiative of establishing LASODA, saying that it helped to fill the gap of many years of neglect faced by physically challenged persons. He stated that Rotary Club International has complemented government efforts through its polio eradication programme, provision of free artificial limbs and other disability friendly appliances as well as provided medical facilities in government hospitals.
