PRESS CONFERENCE: RCMP on Ottawa attack The situation is fluid and on ongoing. There will be many questions we will not be able to answer. Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau at 9:52 am. our force received numerous 911 calls of a shooting at the war memorial . The solider, a reservist stationed in Hamilton has died and officials are in the process of contacting his family. On Parliament Hill a male suspect inside the Parliament buildings was shot point black and is dead. After the shooting the shooter cross the street to Parliament Hill. After that a situation that is still fluid and ongoing occurred. Our priority is safety and security of residents. Additional resources are on standby. We are aware of large presence of military personnel in our community . This is an ongoing operations and asking public to stay away from the downtown core and follow instructions of building managers if you are downtown. The RCMP has set up a hotline and email address. RCMP commanding officer Gilles Michaud RCMP National Division. First he said they send out prayers to all in the area. He says it is a dynamic unfolding situation. All available and necessary resources were activated and deployed when they became aware of the situation. The Ottawa police are leading the investigation on incidents outside Parliament Hill and the RCMP are in charge on Parliament Hill. He said these are the kinds of incidents police train for. He said all Canadians need to be vigilante and report anything that is suspicious to their local police. RCMP are continuing to monitor the situation as it unfolds. He says the situation is not over it is still very fluid. Major General Christopher Coates RCMP- the Canadian Forces was shot by an unknown person at the National War Memorial today. We are working closely with law enforcement partners in response to this situation. As precautionary measure military and civilian personnel will remain in their buildings until further notices, bases are closed to public and all entrances will require identification. Mayor of Ottawa Jim Watson Today is a sad and tragic day for our city and our country. We send our heartfelt condolences to the family of our solider who was standing guard at the National War memorial. There is no pain greater than losing a loved one. Our city the capital of our country has been seen through tragedy in the past its a different sort of tragedy not fully understood. and answers will come from our dedicated police forces, as we reconstruct this tragic series of events. Remember the individual standing guard at the National War Memorial and how one persons life has been taken from us. I want to thank the brave men and women, the first responders, police, ambulance all for their professionalism. In answer to press questions police say: Major General Christopher Coates RCMP said It is still too early to determine details it is an ongoing police operation. Ottawa Police Chief Bordeleau would not say if more suspects are being sought. We are in the process of clearing Parliament Hill and asking people to be aware and vigilant and report anything suspicious. 613-236 1222 ext 5493. Every office in the area is being cleared. Police are going door to door and clearing the offices. Again they would not confirm if there are other suspects. U.S President Obama has spoken with Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Canadians abroad are being asked to be vigilante. Armed forces being told not to wear Canadian uniforms in some foreign instances.
