PRESS RELEASE SA Job Creation Worried About Job Loss Due To Insecurity At OLAM Farm in Rukubi Doma LG Nasarawa State Gentlemen and women of the press, it has become necessary for the office of the Special Assistant to the President (Job Creation) to address some of the challenges affecting job creation and employment generation. This administration is very committed to tackling unemployment, hence the creation of the office of the SA Job Creation by Mr. President. But we all know there are challenges and systematic issues that are affecting employment and job creation. One of them is insecurity and the inability of organisations and individual’s saddles with the responsibility of ensuring security of lives and property of citizens to carry out their duties with sincerity of purpose. At 6am on 4th June 2013, I was woken up by a distress call from Rukubi, Doma local Government, Nasarawa State, where one of the largest rice farms in Nigeria is located and ran by an Indian company OLAM as Fulani bandits besieged the farm and their was a 5 hour shout out between them and the few security operatives posted to the farm and community. A security report was sent out to the CP of Nasarawa State a day before the attack but was ignored. This is not the first time OLAM is attacked. OLAM has a staff strength of 230 permanent staff and 600 casual staff. At the moment 130 permanent staff have lost their jobs, 500 casual staff have left and from eye witness report, their were 50 casualties, while more bodies are been recovered from the river bank including children. This is a really sad situation that will discourage foreign direct investment (FDI), without which we cannot provide enough jobs for Nigerians. And this is why the office of the SA Job Creation is voicing out as people are loosing jobs for obvious reasons. I am hereby calling on the Chief Executives of both Nasarawa and Benue State government as well as the police to find a lasting solution to this situation in other not to scuttle the development agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration as regards job creation. The development of Nigeria in all spheres is our collective responsibility, if we can individually do our bit. (Let’s call someone who’s on ground at Rukubi for 1st hand information). God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria and thank you all for coming. Josephine Washima Special Assistant to the President (Job Creation) Thursday 6 June, 2013
