PROTRAINING client Megan performing pull ups... The Pull up is one of those exercises that many people tend to avoid, simply because they are difficult! The pull up is a great multi joint exercise that involves many of your upper body muscle groups with an emphasis on your posterior chain. This movement doesn’t require any fancy machines, you just need a bar or even a tree branch will do the job. There are many benefits with this exercise, it is not only a great strength and mass builder, but can easily be integrated into metabolic circuits to improve overall conditioning. In order to get the most benefit form the pull up, we recommend you practice them on a regular basis with varying grip positions. This will ensure you stimulate all the different muscle fibres and will also minimise the risk of overuse injuries. If you are a total beginner we recommend you start doing these assisted, by either using bands or with the help of a training partner. Another technique we like to use with our clients are negative pull ups, which will allow you to build up strength more rapidly. Once you master this exercise, it should translate positively into other pulling exercises such as deadlifts, rows or pulldowns. In our opinion, a good goal to set yourself would be to aim for 3x10 reps for guys and 3x6 reps for girls. Want to improve your strength? Please contact us at PROTRAINING
