PSA #450415 CITY OF CAPE TOWN MEDIA RELEASE Lane closures on Blaauwberg Road to allow for final roadworks Certain lanes along Blaauwberg Road will be need to be partially or fully closed due to roadworks. Read more below: Construction along Blaauwberg Road is continuing at pace and is nearing completion. By the end of June, weather-permitting, the bulk of the work on Blaauwberg Road, as far as the bridge at the intersection with Potsdam Road, should be complete. The City of Cape Town would like to inform motorists in Table View and surrounds of lane closures on Blaauwberg Road to allow for final roadworks. The planned programme will proceed as follows, weather-permitting: On Thursday 13 and Friday 14 June, the intersection of Blaauwberg and Gie/Gill Roads will be closed and traffic diverted via Boy de Goede Circle. Traffic will also be required to travel this section of road using the red bus lanes. The following sequence of lane closures will be in effect: · Both lanes inbound on Blaauwberg Road from the bridge to the intersection of Gie Road will be closed from 09:00-16:00 and traffic will be diverted onto the red bus lane. · At 16:00 one lane will be opened to help relieve traffic and the red bus lane will also continue to be used. · At 18:00 all traffic will again be diverted onto the red bus lane. Work will continue in this area on the weekend of Friday 14, Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June with the following closures taking place from 18:00 on Friday 14 June onwards: · The GieGill Road intersection with Blaauwberg Road - only through traffic along Blaauwberg Road will be permitted. · Gie Road traffic will be diverted via Arnold Road into Boy de Goede Circle. · Gill Road traffic will be diverted via side roads. · Inbound traffic along Blaauwberg Road will need to use the red bus lanes as far as Boy de Goede Circle. On Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 June further lane closures will be in effect as follows: · Both lanes outbound on Blaauwberg Road will be closed and traffic will be diverted onto the red bus lane from 09:00-16:00 · At 16:00 one lane will be opened during the peak traffic hours and the red bus lane will also continue to be used · At 18:00 all traffic will again be diverted onto the red bus lane so that work can continue · From 18:30 onwards paving will resume and continue through the night until it is complete The construction is being done on a continuous basis over the weekend to ensure that as much work as possible can be completed. This will also help to avoid disrupting traffic during the peak travelling hours on weekdays. All work is dependent on the weather. Traffic will be deviated as required depending on the closure in effect at the time. These deviations will be clearly marked and where possible flagmen will be on hand to help redirect traffic. Some of these diversions will include the red bus lanes that will be used to help maintain traffic flow during this construction. While driving along the red lanes is usually not allowed, and incurs a fine, we assure motorists that where deviation signage indicates that traffic should divert onto the red lanes this is permitted. Please note, that access to the red bus lane is only allowed where construction signage andor pointsmen deviate traffic onto the red lanes – elsewhere travel along these lanes in private vehicles is still prohibited. We appeal to motorists to obey the deviation signage. Should the work be completed ahead of schedule the closed lanes will be re-opened as soon as possible. The City apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks residents for their patience and understanding in this regard.
