*******PSA to help identify online impersonators/scams****** Some individuals impersonate others for recognition, while others do it for financial gain. Unfortunately, with the expansion of technology and the availability of the internet, the practice of impersonating Soldiers for financial gain is becoming more and more common. Here are a few tips to identify a fake account: 1. Prior to beginning the process of determining whether a page is an impersonation, its best to know whether or not the Soldier has an established presence on social media. Once you have URLs to the official/legit pages, its much easier to determine which accounts are fake. 2. Typically, fake Facebook accounts have very few friends. Many times, people who create these fake accounts do not understand Army culture so there are often mistakes with rank. Savvy imposters who do not want to get caught will intentionally misspell names or use the photo of a well known Army leader with a fictional name. 3. Other things to look for when searching for fake profiles include poor grammar in the about section and posts, bios cut from Wikipedia, watermarked images, few updates and limited number of photos. Lets look out for our buddies to the left and right of us; if something doesnt sound right, it probably isnt. Report it and together, we can help stop imposters.
