PT Tip Of The Day Sciatica: The term Sciatica is used to describe a symptom rather than a specific disease. Some use it to mean any pain starting in the lower back and going down the leg. Others use the term more specifically to mean a nerve dysfunction caused by compression of one or more lumbar or sacral nerve roots from a spinal disc herniation. Sciatica can be caused by a variety of reasons but is mainly due to compression of a peripheral nerve in the lumbar spine or pelvis by the Piriformis muscle. Sciatica can be treated in a variety of ways but is mainly treated by stretching, strengthening, and tissue mobilization or massage. The Piriformis is an External Rotator of the Hip and needs to be stretched by performing Internal Rotation of the Hip by either lying down on you back or seated.
