PUBLIC BODIES REFORM BILL: Further stakeholder consultation - TopicsExpress

PUBLIC BODIES REFORM BILL: Further stakeholder consultation planned on Public Bodies Reform Bill As a result of the heightened public dialogue regarding the Public Bodies Reform Bill, the clean up from Tropical Storm Fay and the preparation for hurricane Gonzalo, the public meeting planned for Wednesday October 15th has been postponed. The Bill is a part of an important effort to protect the Island’s financial future and therefore it is imperative that all parties reach consensus on the best way forward. Government has determined that there is an opportunity to engage in further discussion and consultation with stakeholders. Therefore, it will meet with the Bermuda Trade Union Congress on Thursday, 16th October for further discussions. The Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance the Honourable Everard T. Richards JP MP, stated, “There’s a great deal of misinformation with respect to the Government’s intentions that needs to be clarified. Privatization, mutalisation and outsourcing are not new concepts. Governments all around the world are using some of these tools for the betterment of their countries and economies. “Many countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the US, have chosen to outsource the investment and operation of non-competitive public services. “Caribbean countries such as Jamaica and others have long had privatization policies. The Cayman Islands is currently looking at the possibility of privatization, outsourcing and the sale of assets.” “The Bermuda Government is committed to finding the solution that is right for Bermuda in consultation with our stakeholders.” A new date will be set for a Public Bodies Reform Bill Stakeholder consultation, at which time the Government expects to engage the public on their views relative to the various policy proposals intended to shape the evolution of the Bill.
