Painting realness vs digital realness. can a painting be - TopicsExpress

Painting realness vs digital realness. can a painting be understood as a digital image? can a digital image be understood as a painting? i am going to be on a panel discussion this sat and the topic is Painting on canvas in the digital age. even though i use social media actively and post lots of images here i really am grounded in the realness of studio practice..offline. and when i see images of paintings online, unless i have seen the work in person first, i know that i am not seeing the real thing and that i bring my own idea of what the work looks like to the digital image. a projection. for me a painting is to be seen in the physical space. the computer has changed how we see work and i think it has changed how paintings are made. they are more likely to match the digital image in person now.. smooth.. unblemished..light filled.. and then there are painters whose work doesnt reproduce well digitally.. lumpy..non luminous.. blotchy. paintings that you have to stand in front of to see. some of my facebook friends make paintings that are only viewable online. they exist in this digital realness.. i am old fashioned..in the studio with sticks and bones.. full of scuff marks. what do you think? are we all cyborg now? are we hybrid painters with multiple lives existing as avatar AND as flesh and bone? two worlds. or does the painting only become real when you can lick it?
