Panthers Come Back to Defeat the Dragons Atlanta, Ga. Coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Benedict Tigers on opening day, the Dragons had a quick turnaround week. They were faced with traveling to Atlanta, GA to take on the Panthers from Clark-Atlanta. The Dragons built a 17-0 lead going into the fourth quarter only to let it slip away as the Panthers mounted a 20-point quarter to defeat the Dragons 20-17. 1st Half: (Dragons 3-0) The Dragons put the only points on the board in the second quarter as Carlas Moore Jr. connected on a 45-yard field goal at the 3:34 mark for the 3-0 lead going into halftime. 3rd Quarter: (Dragons 17-0) The Dragons owned the third quarter as back-up quarterback Roderick McKee found receivers Johnny Ivey (42-yards) and Darius Mitchell (24-yards) for touchdown passes to put the Dragons in the driver’s seat and a 17-0 lead at the end of the third quarter. 4th Quarter: (Panthers 20-17) The Panthers converted an interception and a fumble recovery into scoring drives to close the gap to 17-13. With the Dragons driving on the first possession of the quarter, Panthers’ Joshua Tate stepped in front of the Dragons’ receiver to set the stage for the first touchdown. Shaquan Mitchell crossed the goal line after a five-yard run for the first score. A missed extra point made the score 17-6 at the 12:29 mark. The next drive by the Dragons ended with a fumble recovery by Clark Atlantas Marquis Abernathy, who returned it 32 yards for a touchdown and a 17-13 score with 10:20 to play. The Panthers’ defense stopped the Dragons short of the first-down and forced a punt on the next possession to set up the final score. Shaquan Mitchell completed a 6-play, 55-yard drive with a scramble to the left side of the end zone to score his second touchdown of the day to give the Panthers the first lead of the game with 2:32 left to play. The Dragons last drive of the game resulted in another interception on the 2 yard line that ended the Dragons day in Atlanta, Ga. Stats: QB Roderick Mckee completed 18 of 30 passes for 278 yards and 2 touchdown passes. WR Johnny Ivey hauled in 4 passes for 114 yards and a 42 yard touchdown. WR Darius Mitchell was on the receiving end of 5 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown. DB Will Lacy Jr. led the Dragons defense with 8 tackles and one interception for 24 yards. The Dragons will travel to Augusta, Georgia for their next contest as they take on the Lions of Paine College on Saturday September 20. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Augusta, Ga.
