Paramecia, complex single-celled organisms, don’t make a habit of swimming backwards for long distances. However, when placed in a long tube with no space to turn around, Paramecia appeared to learn this new behaviour. Adapting to changing conditions is a step in the development of early intelligence, and this research gives a clue as to just how intelligent these organisms might be.
