Parents, please be assured that the BMS faculty and staff have your childrens safety as their utmost concern! KBIM Radio News Staff Report Thursday, Mar. 20th, 2014 ROSWELL –Chaves County Deputies were dispatched to Berrendo Middle School just before 3 p.m. today in regards to a terroristic threat made by a 12-year old female student against a fellow female classmate. According, to CCSO Deputy Chief Britt Snyder, “A letter was discovered in a locker making a threat towards another student and threatening another school shooting.” Snyder said. “We followed up on the information and were able to identify who wrote the letter and conducted interviews, and why it was written,” Snyder elaborated. “Basically, she (12-year old suspect) didn’t like the other child it was really as simple as that.” According to Snyder, officials at BMS immediately notified the CCSO. “The school did the right thing, and we pretty quickly sorted out who wrote it (the letter) and what their motivation was. We got the information we needed and that was critical,” he said. As for the 12-year old girl, “We didn’t believe there was an immediate attempt to arrest her tonight. The situation is well in hand; her parents were there and were made aware of the situation,” according to Snyder. Snyder added that, “This type of behavior is not going to be tolerated on our part and I am sure not on the school’s part.” “Her parents will have to deal with school issues tomorrow. I am sure they will deal with it from an administrative standpoint.” Sndyer added that the girl will be facing consequences for her actions he just doesn’t know at this point what they will be. “We will consult with the district attorney’s office and the juvenile probation office and make a determination on whether we will file any charges which are a distinct possibility,” Sndyer said. District Attorney Janetta Hicks told KBIM Radio News that any juvenile offense will have a preliminary hearing at the juvenile probation level, before it is sent to the DA’s office on whether to pursue charges. As for any discipline from the Roswell Independent School District, it will be handled per the district policy, according to Superintendent Tom Burris who also confirmed that there will be classes at Berrendo Middle School on Friday. “It is safe to go to school tomorrow,” Smith said.
